Our Washington Beta Chapter was recently interviewed by Matt Lauer of NBC news on the Today show. The chapter had undergone changes from a traditional pledging chapter to become a Balanced Man Chapter. They had difficulties in the beginning, but are now seeing the positive results of SigEp’s Balanced Man Program. SigEp is Different. We are challenging the traditional Greek System. This is the type of positive news that sets our fraternity apart. This is why more men are joining SigEp that any other fraternity in the world. We are going to party and celebrate
our dominance but we are going to be responsible and help our members succeed in college and most importantly in life. SigEp has a lot to be proud of for truly eliminating pledging and hazing, in addition to creating a true four year membership development program that will lead the Greek system.

Please be patient it will take a few minutes to load the first tiime
Athletic competition was of great importance in the ancient Greek curriculum. Ancient Greek philosophy alludes to the concept wholeness through balance of mind, body, and spirit. Our chapter recruits men who recognize the importance of a sound body as an integral part of their academic pursuits.
Brother Rich Gannon (University of Delaware, ’87) is a great example of the spirit of the SigEp concept of Sound Mind, Sound Body. As a SigEp at the University of Deleware, he set 21 school records, including total offense (7,432 yards), passing yards (5,927), pass attempts (845), completions (462), 300-yard games (two) and 200-yard games (12). He was named Yankee Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Year and honorable mention All-America as a senior. He was the only player in Blue Hens history to have 2,000 yards of total offense for three years in a row. As a sophomore, he was selected ECAC Division I-AA Offensive Rookie-of-the-Year
Rich Gannon headed into the 2004 season, one of the top free agent signings in NFL history. He was named the NFL’s 2002 Most Valuable Player after a record-setting season. He has appeared in 157 games with 132 starts. Rich started in a team-record 74 straight games at quarterback and ranks first in the Oakland Raiders team
history in 300-yard passing games (23). Started 2004 among Raiders career leaders in attempts (2,380 second), completions (1,492 first), touchdown passes (111 third), passing yards (17,061 second) and completion percentage (62.7 first). However, due to neck injury Rich has been forced to retire from the NFL but Gannon has already signed with CBS Sports as an NFL game analyst. As a MVP SigEp, he continues to support numerous charities including the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research.
SigEp is a family tradition for Brother Gannon. His older brother was a SigEp, John Gannon (Delaware ’83) and his Father-in-Law was a SigEp, Brother Bill Brown (Illinois ’61). Bro. Bill Brown appeared in 1969 Superbowl.
When asked why he joined SigEp, Brother Gannon says, “the thing that initially attracted me to SigEp was not the fact that I was a legacy, but more so was the diversity within the Fraternity. It was just a good group of guys from all different parts of the country. We had guys who were jocks and we had guys who spent the majority of their time at the library. But we were able to have fun together. That’s what SigEp is all about.”
